While the club is open to all, the book selections all have either queer authors or themes that explore all the varied identities that comprise our LGBTQ+ family. The Club is free to join and there is no obligation to attend every month - join us when you can. And as a little, ahem, perk, One Grand Books is offering a 20% discount on each month’s selected book as well as an ongoing discount for Spine Benders members.

Arpil Selection:
Paul takes the shape of a mortal girl - andrea lawlor

About Paul Takes The Shape Of A Mortal Girl:
“In these irreverent pages, a shapeshifter gets a crash course in gender and sexuality by inhabiting both sides of the binary and arriving precisely somewhere in the middle.” —O, The Oprah Magazine

“HOT” (Maggie Nelson) “TIGHT” (Eileen Myles) “DEEP” (Michelle Tea)

It’s 1993 and Paul Polydoris tends bar at the only gay club in a university town thrumming with politics and partying. He studies queer theory, has a dyke best friend, makes zines, and is a flaneur with a rich dating life. But Paul’s also got a secret: he’s a shapeshifter. Oscillating wildly from Riot Grrrl to leather cub, Paul transforms his body and his gender at will as he crossed the country––a journey and adventure through the deep queer archives of struggle and pleasure.

Paul Takes the Form of a Mortal Girl is a riotous, razor-sharp bildungsroman whose hero/ine wends his/her way through a world gutted by loss, pulsing with music, and opening into an array of intimacy and connections.

MARCH Selection:
Bath Haus - P.J. Vernon

About Bath Haus:
Oliver Park, a recovering addict from Indiana, finally has everything he ever wanted: sobriety and a loving, wealthy partner in Nathan, a prominent DC trauma surgeon. Despite their difference in age and disparate backgrounds, they’ve made a perfect life together. With everything to lose, Oliver shouldn’t be visiting Haus, a gay bathhouse. But through the entrance he goes, and it’s a line crossed. Inside, he follows a man into a private room, and it’s the final line. Whatever happens next, Nathan can never know. But then, everything goes wrong, terribly wrong, and Oliver barely escapes with his life.

He races home in full-blown terror as the hand-shaped bruise grows dark on his neck. The truth will destroy Nathan and everything they have together, so Oliver does the thing he used to do so well: he lies.

What follows is a classic runaway-train narrative, full of the exquisite escalations, edge-of-your-seat thrills, and oh-my-god twists. P. J. Vernon’s Bath Haus is perfect for readers curious for their next must-read novel.
